[Poll] Insulation Tweak?
Hi Everyone,

I was reviewing the insulation properties of this door and I personally believe it should be a worse insulator than a Visco-Gel "door". My reasoning for that is that the graphic for Plastic Door shows visible gaps between the flaps. Meanwhile a visco-gel "door" looks like a gravity-defying wall of liquid that you can walk through. It's also thicker, not a thin flap of plastic.

Reduce Insulation or Leave It Alone?

I can probably make the insulation configurable too, so let's try to keep the discussion on how the default insulation should be balanced.

I'd reduce the insulation to something more manageable. Walk-in freezers that use plastic flaps tend to be on full blast constantly.

I think it should not be better then Visco-Gel, given the work needed to make it, but still pretty good for mid-game because of the plastic.

I've seen very thick, overlapping flaps work very well for walk-in coolers and other areas. Perhaps not for major differences, but separating a "comfortable living" area from a "refrigerated" area it should do rather well.

I think reducing the insulation value makes sense.

actually, plastic ( 0.150 (DTU/(m*s))/°C ) has lower TC than visco-gel ( 0.450 (DTU/(m*s))/°C ) in game files.

also, gaps between sheets actually adds a significant insulation value, see triple pane windows. and their reasoning is quite simple, air between the panes, or in ONI's case oxygen ( 0.024 (DTU/(m*s))/°C ), has significantly lower TC than glass or plastic.

I think you misunderstood what "gaps between sheets" meant because the artwork in the mod is "sideways".
The plastic flaps are covering the width of the doorway, they are not "stacked" in a way that should provide better insulation.

If you've ever seen a walk-in freezer in real life you'll see that the flaps just swing around as you walk through them and it allows air to mix very easily.

ah, i see what you mean, yes the gaps can indeed cause airflow to pass through it, most of the heat transfer is from air mixing in this case.

on the note of such types of insulation, there is another one of similar note, the air curtain. logically it shouldn't prevent heat transfer due to itself mixing air forcibly, but the results is quite interesting as it provides even better insulation than a plastic curtains.

You can already make an air curtain door with high pressure vents. That's all they are. The air can't move through the high pressure zone, everything flows away from the high pressure cells.
