I think the Yameba from Metroid Fusion would fit well on the Stardust Cell Staff, since it somewhat resembles it's shape.

Perhaps an interesting idea would actually be the Optic Staff, as you could actually model two X-cores for it. The melee minion for the staff could be one of the "melee" oriented X-cores which hold standard upgrades, and then the Laser minion could be the Beam Core X. I think it would be a fun little nod to the X-cores. (Sorry for a double post. I wasn't sure if you had comment notifications on. Feel free to delete a dupe.)

I think botwoon from Super Metroid could work for a worm like summon.
