Allies are still useless
I've never modded the game so I can't say I know anything, but is there any possible way to make allies useful? I'd prefer they+we just be forced to join defensive call to arms all the time, rather than have the alliance mean nothing.
Also, what's with allies attacking your settlements? Surely this is something a mod can fix?

That's just how the AI is in Rome, unfortunately not fixable, especially the anti-player bias. The best you can do is play on medium campaign difficulty, since it balances the agressiveness a little bit more.
