Looking at the existing portraits by opening the DLC zip files is a good way to get the basics.

One more missing trick is adding a offset in the form of :o1x2 at the end of a layer, this is often needed to make hair and beards line up better with the face. (1 = x offset, 2 = y offset, in pixels)
