If you are using the HL2 Weapons given on spawn (but also if you are on any difficulty that isnt Nightmare or Apocalypse), I'd recommend going for the other weapons instead of relying on the ones you start with as they are intentionally weak (and cheap) and go for the ArcCW Handguns first, as those will provide more power and generally more upgrades. If you are playing the difficulties i mentioned, then you should probably play the difficulties that keep the budget above 700 before you go into them, as at that point, you should have probably been able to learn some of the ins and outs of the gamemode itself.
Also during boss fights, there is an actual limit to the enemies that isnt on display (at least i dont believe so), so theoretically, if you are agile enough, you can focus on the enemies first while avoiding attacks from the boss itself and clear them out (you'll know that you are almost close to clearing them out once they begin to become outlined in red), if the map you are playing on makes this more difficult for you, then its probably best to find a map that provides enough of a challenge but also gives you breathing room to figure out what you want to do.
However if you are unable to focus on killing the enemies, I'd recommend using a weapon that has Hemo as an option as it will chew through their HP while giving you time to focus on killing the reinforcements.
So to summarize: Utilize infusions, be moving at all times to avoid getting cornered, and gear yourself proper to avoid premature deaths.
