To control more than 4 units you need to upgrade your ship's communication (on surface, without brain) and life support (on vessel). To do this go to shipyard, then open ship control console and press right until you see upgrades.

hmm where can we find shipyards? are they just where you dock and buy things?

you know where you can travel to other planets? search them by the shipyard :)

where you go to see other places to go the shipyard is on the next page of it

Its kinda hard to find you have to keep scrolling down in one of the travel menus

how do you open the ships console?

Its the thing where you can save/load, travel to other places etc.
