Squads in vehicles
I may be asking a dumb question, but im new to arma

i can get infantry working just fine, but when i try to have motorised patrols (ie. 4 men in a car) it spawns with only the driver. Same with aircraft. Is there some way to do this properly that Im missing?

You have to toggle the option on in the faction module

Yeah I am having a problem, 3 vehicles spawn and have a driver each with the units I set. Instead of 3 guys in the same vehicle. Do you know which settings exactly and what to set those settings to?

I don't quite understand your problem. You only want 1 vehicle in the group instead of 3 vehicles?
