It wouldn't hurt for you to add a background, add some interesting things to it?

This is not possible within the in game editor.

There are a couple of maps that extend beyond the playable boundaries, so it is possible.
Edit: Ahem, I mean plenty of maps that extend beyond the playable boundaries. Some maps don't extend as far and usually there is a boundary to prevent you from seeing the rest of the map.

The Vanilla maps were created in Unity so it's restricted to Unity only and besides Dustbowl I haven't really seen it.
