what I would do for me and my friends was having us all start with 1 of every machine (except for the solar panels), medical kit, and tool box. with these, we had enough to find resources and collect them. I suggest making it free to just spawn in resource or storage crates, otherwise it gets laggy and messy fast-. this isn't the only way to do it, but this is just how me and my friends do it together, I hope this helps. (also I'm sorry for any bad english, second language)

primitive bench is for crafting and smelting (alt + e on it to activate smelter), to salvage props for their materials you can

after crafting a primitive bench, your next goal is to make a toolbox. you have to scrounge for more props to make basic parts,
searching in concrete floors give industrial props (aluminium, steel, plastic etc)
grass gives natural props, maybe (organics, ceramics, a whole car for some reason)

and when you finish crafting the toolbox, you are in midgame, so you can craft even better machines such as better smelter™, pumpjack™, etc™

tldr; scrounge den craft stuff
