go into your "GarrysMod" folder. inside there should be another one called "garrysmod". Go there. After that there will be a "data" folder. And in there, there will be a folder called "mapicons". if you want them to work, go to your "maps" folder in the "garrysmod" folder. make a new folder called icon. Move all the images in there and you will be good to go!

unfortunately i can't help too much myself, but look into making symbolic links. basically linking the two folders so they're one-in-the-same. google symbolic links in Windows (assuming you're on Windows)

Does the icon folder have to be uppercase or lowercase? also if this method is now outdated what's the new solution?

never mind I fixed it lol. Name the folder "thumb" in lowercase

I posted a discussion post about how to automate this, it's kind of a tricky process. If you don't want to do all that, look around the comments, you need to move the icons from one folder to another within your GMOD files.
