What role does the sentry gun fill?
I assumed that it was simply the third tier basic turret, after the mini-turret and military turret, but when I did the math it came out significantly worse overall than both of those other guns at every range.

On top of this, with its huge burst count of 6 and only being able to fire 60 shots before rearm, it can only fire 10 bursts before running out of ammo (as compared to the mini-turret's 30 bursts and the military turret's 60 bursts).

It looks like the sentry gun is worse than the cheaper turrets in every respect, except that it can fire 2 cells further. Am I missing something?

You´re missing the fact that it does not require an electrical grid.
You can set those up anywhere on the map or instantly deploy them on caravan fights.
Incredibly useful stuff.

But I treat turrets more as expendable bulletsponges and softeners to reduce risks in the actual firefight.
