I though the beard made the medic look like Henry Jones Sr.

It’s not based on anyone in particular I don’t think. The concept artist originally drew it as a potential hairstyle for one of the scientists in the Agent Gunn SFM and we adapted it to fit medic.

It looks a whole lot like Sigmund Freud's beard, i thought at first.

Yeah, it's based on Sigmund Freude. There's a photo of him in that exact pose with the cigar.
