Help getting started
I started a game and I am only able to recruit peasants and they always get slaughtered so I don't get renown and I can't join a faction.

Once you get 10 settlers you can build a refuge. The refuge can be used to train better troops or equip your peasants with better weapons via the stash.

You can also hire mercs in towns, but I like using the refuge, remember your refuge can be destroyed so try and give it a strong garrison.
