I prefer playing starting as the Ruby Company, attack the Railskulkers in the north, make the Dwarven Hold my capital and later enact the decision to form the formable kingdom (can't remember what it is called). Be aware that while your force limit remains quite high even after you settle down, it is only a temporary boost and it will be removed after about 50 years after settling. Hope that helped
