Was Half-Life meant to take place in the USSR?
Think about it for a moment. They named the concept character "Ivan." That's a very sterotypical name for a Russian. They used Bulgaria for Half-Life 2, but not for Half-Life 1. I believe that Half-Life one was meant to have a STALKER like feel originally, much darker atmosphere. Like a secret USSR laboratory that had a catostropic failure, but ultimately they went for an Area 51 sort of theme instead. Half-Life 1 was going to possibly be Slav, confirmed.

Yes... but the SETTING of the GAME can still take place in the USSR or the former USSR...

Idk it all just fits together. It seems plausible. I think they switched to the Area 51 theme because Area 51 became a big sensation around the time this game came out.

Actually no. Ivan was just a nickname for the character, and the game always took place in a Area 51 like facility.

Unless you worked at Valve and personally worked on Half-Life you aren't really at liberty to say. Just like how Half-Life 2 Beta was leaked and revealed it had an alternative setting before the game was finished, Half-Life may of also gone through something like that. Without the leak, we would of never seen the beta or known what its theme was.

For HL2 it's Bulgaria to be specific. Anyway, For HL I was saying in the early concept to alpha stages.

The original concept of Half-Life's location was Mesa Diablo in the deserts of New Mexico. (Source: Half-Life 2: Raising the Bar) Ivan the Space Biker is a fan name, as well.

Ivan was the original model for Gordon Freeman during the development of Half-Life 1.

The two women in Hazard Suits in Half-Life 1 are Gina Cross and Colette Green, playable in Half-Life: Decay. Are there any other questions?
