- Spot a goliath in the middle of the town on deggendorf... I didn't have an AT rifle, and even if I did, that many civilian deaths is insta-lose... what do??
- Suicide bomber hit my first patrol and killed them all within two minutes on Sipplingen
- Won a game using only the interpreter/officer conversion ability (never had to capture or kill a single subversive, converted them all)
- Had a comeback on Sipplingen from 3% H&M. Got a lucky break on RNG in combination with a last-minute purchase of the OSS operative.
- Early subversive and mining crew shutting down my supply route when I don't have access to mine detectors yet. A rifleman became an unwilling mine-clearing device.
- "Fur das Faterland!" then x4 polizei killed and OSS operative bleeding
- Supply truck running into mining crew, killing two and shoving their vehicle off the bridge. Yup, supply truck still made it to the base.
- Called in an airstrike on a suspected enemy position. 1x enemy killed, 4x civilian killed...
- Used tank traps to force supply trucks around enemy mining areas
Too many goliath stories to tell. One hidden in brush in a field full of cattle, blowing everything sky high when I ran near. Driving up over the highway ridge into my FOB in Sipplingen and blowing up the equipment rack.
Sprinting into the suicide bomber.
Missing almost an entire magazine at super close range from a grease gun on a suicide civilian, and he nails me with the AT grenade. Was like a really bad action movie scene as my eyes just got bigger and bigger in pure confusion. I was like that US infantry voice line in-game, "Amazing!". 3 Stars on the grease gun (was my Officer), come on man.
Tractors and motorcycles have no feelings at all, and will *readily* run your men over more often than the cars/trucks.
Allied convoy derping at a traffic jam on Sipplingen, under attack by an enemy squad leader with the STG44. Backs over him then escapes safely. Pretty sure my neighbors heard me laugh at that one and yell "get wrecked noob!"
Just to name a few.
In desperation, I recruit a militaman who actually manages to keep the enemy at bay. My officer is running around like a madman reviving bleeding polizei, his own terp, and you-know-whos, while my squadleader steals a previously vacated kubelwagen with MG34 from the cornfeild, drives up on their flank and mows them down in a few seconds.
Moves like that would be an instant game loss for me. Examples of my luck on Edertal yesterday.
Had 4-5 runs in a row end at the request or during the transition of my 2nd supply truck. Can't remember all of them, but a few:
My build was T1 rack -> Ranger with 1st supply truck.
1.) Early mission event, before my ranger could even hit the field. Break off my reggies to go check a nearby position I've managed to find this thing at before. Most of the times I've just dealt with its effect because I have no way/time to break off elite infantry to scour the map for it.
I escort my 2nd convoy like halfway to my FOB before figuring it's safe enough for me to leave, and it gets intercepted by a 3 man assault team. Restart.
2.) Early pak38 AKA automatic grenade launcher in the road at the north, near the main supply route, also intercepts a random convoy that spawned around the same time. I get there just as it dies, thinking I have time to rush the gun without splitting my units (not that you can actually split quickly and effectively with the dumb unit control scheme in MOW). Wrong, it gets one shot off, knocks down all 3, GG. Can't even get into molotov range due to the reload rate vs. the time your soldiers stay knocked down.
Another cute AI scheme in this game that had to be invented by a genius. After getting up from an AOE/explosion, your squad *will all stand back up and immediately run back into a cluster/group where they got blown up at*. Innovation in game design and unit automation.
3.) AI movement/stop glitch near the chokepoint in the road along the field/fence and hill/ridge just north of the FOB. Instinctively, as someone who's played almost every RTS since the mid 1990s at some point or another, I click on the one guy who's not moving before he can get run over by a civilian vehicle.
Well in this game, that *still selects the entire squad and not just the guy you click*. You have to individually box him, sometimes twice, and pray he's also not so close to other units that you box them too (which also happens a lot). The soldier stop-glitched will not move if anyone else is selected. At the whim of idiotic design, he gets run over in the first couple minutes with no way to revive. GG NCO, restart. I was trying to kit my officer while they were in route to go north.
And so on. Pretty much the game in a nutshell for me. I'd take no AI over dumb AI in a RTS any day. Not even close to being a debate. Don't give me something I have to fight just to control my units accurately.
Edit: Here's a new one. Officer bounces a molotov off a fence back onto himself and the ranger. GG. Off a fence he just threw one over a second ago from the same spot. Must have limp-wristed that second toss.
Molotov hits item.
Molotov catches nearby building on fire.
Building catches multiple civs on fire.
On-fire civ runs into informant. Catches informant on fire.
Game over at this point. 0% H&M.
I keep watching the end-game screen in fascination as nearly 1/4 of the map burns down from this one molotov. Killing civs at it goes.
The special event item is still there.
I tried to hearts and minds, but I arsoned instead.
Squad derps into an MG34 covering a chokepoint.
What I should have done: pulled back, and used fire support
What I did: tried to manuever on mostly open terrain
Entire squad mowed down.
Its okay, I have my officer on a horse with a morphine pack. Send him over there and call in airstrike to kill MG.
Officer runs into IED way the hell away from anyone who can help him.
GG from 96% H&M
Manage to get polizei EVERYWHERE and spam the eco advisors along with running into a MASSIVE group of 12 Volkstuurn and NCO bleeding but manage to revive, H&M starts to rise rapidly, get OSS guy and start him on militia, get around 3 militia recruited before he runs into some ruins and this low level volkstuurn with an mp 3008 guns him down and he dies before i can revive him, welp.
But... One of the militia members he left behind was in a sunflower field, next to a house in a remote part of the map behind a small stone fence. Do these details make a difference?
Abso-frickin-luetly.
Later in game, decent amount of Subversive corpses on the ground (too lazy to arrest/convert) and some dead civs (NCO has bad track record) and this ONE militia member, out in a field, with a MOSIN, sees some Regular Infantry approaching. I send over my QRF wthinking "oh well i guess that's one less militia" but NO. The dude takes down at least 7 infantry and holds them off for a good few minutes before my dudes get there and mop up the rest.
I named him Hans.
Hans Never misses.
(I deadass spent a few seconds wide eyed at this god of a militiaman)
He simply crouched down and shot ever single last one of them.
That single freaking German did more damage to the nazis then what any of my men could dream of doing xd
