What was your tech level and how was your defense?
WHat other mods do you have?
Did you have a good melee pawn?
Do you have access to warcaskets or drop pods?

You can destroy elemental rifts by attacking them last i checked... So while your colony is fighting a wave, you can drop pod a good melee pawn to destroy the portal.

it's a relatively new colony starting from Naked Brutality, and I hadn't even researched machining yet. My best melee was 10, but it's hard to attack when you're getting swarmed with maddened donkeys, 9 granite elementals, and dealing with toxic fallout

Seriously though, it'd be fine if it weren't for the fallout. Why the hell is there toxic fallout in it? Makes zero sense.

That actually depends on what kind of elementals come through the rift. Earth elementals give Toxic Fallout, fire elmentals cause a heat wave, ice elementals cause a cold snap, and air elementals cause thunder storms
