Musings on Available Factions for Custom Battle and Multiplayer
I've noticed in the description comments thread for this mod that a lot of people complain regularly that they can't see certain factions in custom battle and multiplayer despite it being clearly stated that it is a known "issue" with a simple workaround. Obviously this is a classic example of people not bothering to read the whole description before frantically posting bug reports, but it got me thinking. Clearly not all of the factions in the game are able to be selected, but why are some factions included and not others?

What immediately jumps out to the casual observer is that only Old World factions are added to cb&m (Custom Battle and Multiplayer - I'm too lazy to type that out for this whole essay). This makes sense because presumably a considerable amount of the work for this mod was able to be ported from WH1 (I'm just spitballing here, I could be completely wrong). However, even all of the Old World factions in ME didn't make the cut. The Empire, the Dwarfs, the Brettonians, and the Woodelves have all of their factions included for custom battle I think (From the Old World, so Sudenburg, Karak Dank, and Thegan's Errantry are not included). On the other hand, the Beastmen, The VC's, and the Greenskins did not get any of theirs beyond those automatically included for owning all of the DLC's from WH1 as far as I can tell. Why is this the case? Why, for instance, can I play as Wydrioth, Karak Norn, and the Empire Secessionists, but not Templehof, the Top Knotz, and the Warherd of the Dark Omen? What criteria determines if a faction is available to be played in cb&m?

As an example, generally speakings, all Empire factions are the same, in that they have access to the same troops. The capacity to play any of them in custom battle provides flavor more than anything for the most part. There are mods out there that change this. For instance, Mixu's Legendary Lords makes the Brettonian and Imperial factions different by giving those factions unique LL's and Hero's available to only to them. With his mod enabled, only Parravon can use the Legendary Lord Cassyon d'Parravon for example. In this instance, Parravon needs to be available for cb&m or else Cassyon can not be played. So my next question is: What other factions like this are playable for the sake of mod compatability?

Now to the reason I bothered to bring this up in the first place. Could some factions be trimmed from the list? Are there some factions included in cb&m selection that really only add a bit of flavor but not much else? My thought is that if some factions were removed from the list, less people would complain about not being able to see all the factions. I know that I, for one, find it to be a mild inconvenience to regularly be changing the UI scale, but that's mostly because my eyesight sucks and I go into custom battle a lot.

In summation, what criteria did the factions available in custom battle and multiplayer make to be included, and could some be removed so less people would complain about not seeing them all?

@Crynsos I hope I'm not coming across as another entitled shmuck on the internet demanding your time over my petty concerns and inquiries. It's just something I've wondered about and didn't find answers to elsewhere. If you find the time to read this wall of text and respond I'd be delighted.

@Community - What are your thoughts on the factions available in custom battle and multiplayer? What factions should be removed? What factions should be added?

You have to differentiate between raw battle Multiplayer (to which I usually only refer as Custom Battle, as it is the same thing essentially) or actual campaign Multiplayer. Usually the reports concern Campaign MP as it has a far longer list of available factions, while Custom Battle is far more restrictive with its UI, so I have to enforce a much smaller selection, generally based around the most popular factions.
The UI issues with Custom Battle also only happen if you run a sub-1080p resolution and are thus much rarer and hardly ever reported.

Either way, the solution is the same, as long as people aren't too lazy to read.

I didn't spend much time on Custom Battle so far as the selection is already very saturated and it typically is a much less important aspect of my mod, aside from that it makes pretty much no difference what subfaction of a race you use, unless Legendary Lords are concerned. Otherwise it's just a color palette swap.

So far the selection is mainly directly ported over from Warhammer 1 and popular factions there.
The Empire especially has always been a fan favourite, as have been its various subfactions, hence all of them are currently included.
Vampires have 3/4 factions on the list (Templehof is hardly popular and non-canon), Dwarfs are also generally more popular than random Greenskin factions (especially the very roster-limited Savage Orcs like Top Knotz would be hardly interesting to have) and so on. I was trying to strike a balance between having some factions of each race, with a focus on those most people actually to play with. The fact that Mixu focused on Empire lords primarily also had an impact on this.

As for Mixu's LLs, he can always modify the list just like anyone else, to focus on the factions he made content for, while my list is a more generic collection of all races and their relative popularity.

As I have not had much time to work on Custom Battle since Warhammer 2 got released, I do intend to review the list over time to add new favourites, though with how many factions we now have, it will be even harder to pick and choose which are worth having around over others.
The majority of factions that can be added to this list really just "add a bit of flavor but not much else", especially as even CA combines their factions into a bare minimum nowadays, making all of their LLs available within a minimum of Custom Battle factions together.

If you really want to edit the list of what factions are available for your reasons, then you can easily do that yourself by editing the factions table and unchecking the mp_available checkbox.

I'll be honest, multiplayer campaigns never even crossed my mind when I wrote the discussion prompt, probably because I don't have any friends who play this game :(

After I read your response, I went to host a multiplayer campaign just to see what you were talking about, and I was immediately impressed by how many factions there are in this game. I had to lower the UI scale to 50% to see all of the factions for Mortal Empires on my tiny screen. Multiplayer campaign faction selection is indeed a very different beast than custom battle faction selection.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my post Crynsos! I'm now inspired to download PFM and tinker with it a little bit.
