Turn 1 - send agent to chaqua by tehenhuain to further kroaks quest chain, build the skink 300 gold building (builds cheaper and faster than the gold mine) and demolish the saurus building and replace with gold mine, then attack the skeggi army near you, once they retreat the first time don't attack them again, you need them to settle the broken city up north. Afterwards attack the closest empire colony and take it. Make sure to grab route marcher.
Turn 2 - sail and capture the last empire colony (targetting it is tricky it may not be doable in 1 turn unless you finangle how you approach the coast if this gives you problems hollar and ill take screenshots of what to do. Recruit 3 cohort of either type.
Turn 3+ - force march straight up to rats and forget about the territory you took, kill rats as fast as possible. they'll have alot of crap rats but you should be able to blugeon them.
Turn Post dead rats - use your rite of priemival glory, transfer ancient salamanders, as many bastil as is avaliable (these guys will be your front line), 1-2 razors, and disband the rest. Make sure you keep your income under -750ish a turn, disbanding the standard saurus mazda starts with can help with this. Take all that crap and mass murder skeggi, and from there unify the provinces below you at your discrtion just know that morathi will come mess you up so make sure to build walls at fallen gates ASAP. If skeggi has fat garrisons at this point and camping with armies, recruit a solo lord and have him bait in forced march while you ambush with mazda, or bait in ambush using the towns you took.
Mazda is pretty micro dependent and alot of your fights will require some... finesse so if you have trouble with any battles along the initial steps I'll do my best to give you some tips.
I was pretty much in the same boat as you, prob took me 15 restarts to find an open that didn't make me want to eat my own head.
