I cheat like a mofo so I dont tend to use cruel I feel like I'm unworthy also my micro is ♥♥♥♥ so I never actually do very good at playing the mod despite playing it for 10+ years ^^; I find watching other people who are actually good at fighting cruel badass and listen to their games on youtube.

I get most of my fun from collecting Heros like pokemon and narrating campains in my head the way captain shacks old videos were.

Yeah, I'm pretty terrible about collecting and hoarding legitimacy or captured units myself. I do often reload if I lose them on what I don't consider a "worthy" death.

I turn on cruel towards the end of a GC to give the last faction a sort of "Last stand" buff to make it more of a challenge.

I turn on cruel mode after I get my core worlds set up. It get boring when the ai rarely attacks.
