Imperial leaders are their own system called Regimes now.
Dark Empire also isn't bound to era 4 anymore.
How Regimes and Dark Empire work is explained in the in-game guides
The research is year bound and those years are based on lore dates. So no research isn't too fast.
Empire AI not advancing in Regimes is something the devs might look into if true. Also you assume that only the main empire gets DE, which isn't true either.
Well that might just be pure bad luck on the RNG part, but certainly something that needs further testing.
Then I did Eriadu run and by cycle 60-ish Isard didn't show up but some of the heroes did like Convarion. And I already have like half a galaxy painted due to amount of SSD's availeable from the start. And there's no real progression for other factions it feels like.
Definitely a much worse system than the previous one since it oftentimes means Empire has like zero characters since starting heroes die fast and new ones barely appear.
Isard - stealth hero, and imperial leader doesn't affect ANY progression
my thoughts exactly. appearance \ disappearance of certain major characters adds a lot of flair to the campaign experience
