I don't know if they wore it during ww1, but they might have, I know the french uniforms in ww2 were often brown. Belgium I know also had uniforms simular to this in the second world war.

the colonial troops wore brown, like the Zouaves or the Senegalese and North Africans. But they have different helmet insignias, unlike this model, which has the regular French army helmet insignia.
