A restoration of the firing sounds for the rifle from the L4D1 beta. This was restored using audio from a gameplay video of an early version of L4D1 and cleaned up to reduce background noise. Doesn't include reloading sounds, but includes an incendiary ammo firing sound.

Yeah, listening to the video and the CSS Famas sound, it really does seem like the beta hunting rifle sound was just a lower-pitch Famas.

it also sounds similar to something from Combat Arms, or Crossfire. But you know, those free games lift sfx from where ever they can

I actually looked in CS:S for a similar sound but didn't think to listen to any sound that wasn't a sniper rilfe lol

After looking around the files for CS:S, I'm pretty sure the sound is actually a Famas sound with a lower pitch, or sped up, or something. After all, the final hunting rifle uses a lightly modified Scout sound. Take a listen yourself:
