I have an M1 Garand that I acquired through the US CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) many years ago. I like your mod, but, the reload looks more like this:

I was taught to have the top round of the clip on the right, so you have more surface to push down on, and to rest the edge of my hand, just by the pinky finger against the front of the bolt handle. When done properly, when a new clip is inserted, the bolt be released and move forward under spring pressure, chambering the first round on it's own. With a little practice this motion can be done very quickly with no wasted movements.
