Better Road Builder

Descripción
Achievement compatible and save safe

This mod changes the color and thickness of the roads and adds rivers in both the Roads and Road Builder map modes. It should now be much easier to see and plan road connections and bridges.

Publicado originalmente por edrino:
If anyone is having trouble getting the colored roads and rivers to show up make sure in Settings -> Map -> Flat Map Mode is set to anything besides Never

Customization
Both Roads and Rivers can be added to any map mode as long as Flat Map is being used. By default, I want the mod to only affect the Roads and Road Builder map modes, but I have included instructions on how to easily modify the settings to fit your needs. Please let me know if the instructions aren't clear enough.

These files are located here:
  • steamapps\workshop\content\3450310\3605677866\in_game\gfx\map\map_modes\00_map_modes_roads.txt (Add desired map modes to this file)
  • steamapps\workshop\content\3450310\3605677866\main_menu\gfx\FX\river_surface.shader (Modify river flow/color)
  • steamapps\workshop\content\3450310\3605677866\main_menu\gfx\FX\road_mulpass.shader (Modify road segment color)

Notes
  • Because the mod does a partial override of the map modes file, all map modes affected by this mod will appear first in your list of pinned map modes. I don't think there is a way around this, but I feel this is still better than the alternative. It would also allow you to easily rearrange your pinned map modes, even if you don't add roads to them, just copy them into the file in the order you want them to appear in your list.
  • Any changes made to these files will only take effect the next time the game is launched. It's safe to edit them while the game is running, but neither loading a save, nor returning to the main menu will do anything.
  • The only way I was able to find for the mod to work at all is to modify one of the gradient parameters and have a sentinel look for the specific value. It works fine with the Road and Road Builder map modes because each location is colored independently, it becomes an issue with maps like Political where a small change can have a more noticeable impact. I have tried to find the parameter with the least visual impact and used relatively low values, but there will be an impact on some maps if you choose to add roads and/or rivers to them. Unfortunately I cannot think of a better way to make it work.
  • I am going to leave things as they are for now, I think the visual impact is minimal (I cannot actually notice if there is a difference), but for the time being this is a limitation of the engine that I can't figure out how to get around. If anyone has any suggestions, I am all ears.

Change Log
v1.3
  • Changed to using a partial override file instead of overriding the entire map_modes.txt file. Should help future proof the mod against patches, and help with compatibility with other mods.
  • I have included instructions in the new 00_map_modes_roads.txt file to explain how to add the effect to other map modes.
  • Apologies, this update will require you to redo everything once again if you had added roads or rivers to any map modes.
I am pretty much satisfied with the mod in its current state, but I am open to ideas on how to improve it. I kind of want to modify the tactical map mode next so it isn't entirely useless, but that likely won't be for a while if I do.

same issue with roads not showing up

The 1.01.10 issue I have is that most roads are simply not drawn. It doesn't matter how I adjust graphic settings, rendering etc... It's like only about 10% of the roads are drawn.

If I disable the mode, I don't see the roads drawn correctly either (only a tiny fraciton of roads are drawn) which is why I don't think it's the mods fault.

Why only some roads are drawn - I have no idea.

i do not like using flat map can I still use this mod? and can you make it so its more compatible for us that like the extra map features that not just using "flat map" enables.

My assumption has been it has something to do with enabling it in other map modes and that it kind of 'leaks' in to the base map mode because I don't remember this occurring when first downloading the mod, but I don't have a way to validate said assumption at this point

I'm sorry it took me so long to look into it, I see the problem with the Trade Range map. I've been sick and just haven't been able to do much lately. I will try to have an update out today or tomorrow that fixes it. Sorry for the slow response to this problem.

@Creme1 I've noticed the flashing on occasion as well, but I personally can't seem to reproduce the issue consistently to really try and understand what's going on there. The implementation of the mod is, by necessity, kinda jank (IMO) because the game doesn't have any other way (that I could find) to tell the shaders what map mode is enabled. So I'm sure there are bound to be some unforeseen issues.

I was not able to notice any problems in the 1.0.10 beta. So if anyone is still having issues with it and could provide more information, that would be great.

2 is when zooming in/out it'll flash the rivers/roads from the map mode briefly between zoom 'ticks' (as in individual rotations of the mousewheel) then go back to normal. Specifically, when zooming out, there's the tick where you no longer see Fog of War (as in all the map is lit up the same, as opposed to areas where you don't have vision being dark), next tick out it will flash rivers, next tick out it'll flash roads, next tick out is when you can no longer see the circles for buildings that are being constructed in locations. On zooming in is the same in reverse, so get to the tick where building queues show up, next tick in roads will flash, next tick in rivers will flash, next tick in areas without vision are again darkened by fog of war. This is with Vulkan and 3d terrain turned off, changing the flat map mode setting does NOT seem to affect it at all. I also have not messed with the mod at all

Hey, Love this mod! Big thank you. 2 specific bugs I've had:

1 is the same issue with the market map mode as Lightmgl. When clicking on a market, instead of the trade range map mode showing up, it'll show this weird blank map mode and be kind of bricked, like to see markets again you have to click on the map which will deselect the market and then it goes back to normal market map mode.

What does colors mean?

Something with the Trade Range mapmode gets messed up in 1.10, it goes all wonky when you click on a Market and would normally go to that Mapmode.

Best mod out there!
