Flaws in the bat animations are a lot less obvious since the katana and golf club use them and are attached to the right hand, and as you mentioned, they look fine for the most part. But there are still some animations - most notably shoving and swinging - that do not look correct unless patched, most likely due to the katana using its own unique swinging animation.
So you could perhaps get away with not patching the animations, if you can ignore the more subtle issues with some of the animations. But I wanted to ensure all the animations looked as consistent as possible, so I patched all of them.
