Earlier Churchill models, like the Churchill I and II, were armed with a 2-pounder (40mm) gun, which became inadequate for dealing with enemy armor as the war progressed. The Churchill III was the first variant to be equipped with a more powerful 6-pounder (57mm) anti-tank gun, improving its ability to engage German tanks and fortified positions effectively.
