There is hardly a paucity of cathedrals named Notre-Dame, they abound in Europe and beyond. But of these cathedrals, all with their own storied histories, the Notre-Dame de Paris (meaning “Our Lady of Paris”) is by far the best known and most beloved. This magnificent church has survived multiple episodes of destruction. Most recently a fire in April 2019 caused serious damage, with the roof and spire collapsing from the flames, but after five years of reconstruction, the cathedral reopened on 7 December 2024. It remains a symbol of the city of Paris and the French nation, and one of the most visited monuments in Paris.
