Developed by the initiative of the Ural Design Bureau of Transport Engineering as part of the R&D project "Proryv-3", following the modernization of the "Proryv-2" program. The goal was a comprehensive modernization of the tank, covering almost all key systems. The modernization was based on the successful engineering solutions of the T-90AM and T-90SM tanks. The result was a tank named T-90M. They also took into account the operational experience and shortcomings of these machines. The work on designing the T-90M tank, "Object 188M", began in the early 2010s.
