Omschrijving
This mod adds the ability to farm tree saplings in crop plots. This mod requires the mods Advanced Agriculture installed before it. Sadly, there are many issues with the way vanilla trees currently work that make a mod like this very difficult to implement without the changes made by Advanced Agriculture.

Tree saplings grow to harvestable size in one year. At harvest, any growths the tree produces will be harvested alongside a sapling plant. The sapling can be further processed into a structural material (thread from abaca, wood from most other trees) and a sapling seed.

Sapling seeds can be obtained in several ways. Brewing and milling most tree fruits will provide seeds, the exceptions being cacao, cashews, and coffee since these seeds are obtained from the roasting process. There is also a category of reactions in the Farmer's Workshop which provides seeds from all trees. Edible fruits and nuts can be processed into seeds, or if a tree does not have those the wood can be sacrificed to collect the sapling seeds. The exception is abaca, as it does not have wood or edible fruits, so the leaves can be used to obtain seeds. The reactions for processing the sapling plants also produces a seed. Sapling seeds can be bought in trade from other civilizations, allowing access to exotic tree materials.

This mod uses the WORLDGEN_ENABLED and FORTRESS_MODE_ENABLED reaction tokens to easily integrate with all modded civilizations!

DFHack has a couple of tools for creating trees: gui/sandbox and plant.

darn, now how am i supposed to put the feather tree in the courtyard of minas tirith?:ftired:
Droseran  [auteur] 9 dec om 6:17
Correct, there's currently no mechanic in Dwarf Fortress that allows for the manual creation of actual tree structures.

so this mod doesnt let you grow actual trees, it just creates sapling crops that you process to turn into logs?

No problem, I'm glad I could help!

Well that explains that. Thanks for taking the time to help me figure out what was going on and for the various mods!

Yes, Mountain is part of the freezing biome list (hardcoded, mods can't change that.) It's meant to be an alpine habitat with no soil and very cold temperatures, but it can end up on lower altitude tiles that have soil and don't freeze.

DFHack is reporting that loam is in the Mountains Biome and the fire clay is in a Tropical Forest (Forest_Tropical_Moist_Broadleaf). I also found a tiny bit of sand in that biome and I was able to plant saplings on it as well. So yeah, it seems to be a biome thing and not a soil type thing.

The other save I have is the same way. Mountain biome doesn't allow for saplings; Temperate Freshwater Marsh does. Now that I look at the list again I think the mountain biome is actually blocking a lot seeds. Only 10 seed types can be planted in the Mountains vs like 30+ otherwise.

I don't think either get freezing temp (both have a river that does not freeze in winter). Do mountains just count as a freezing biome by default maybe?

Which species of saplings are you trying to plant, and do you know what biome(s) the different soils are in? DFHack has a tool (I can't remember which one) that can highlight the biome assignments for the tiles.

I have another save on a different world with a similar mod list. Most of the surface is fire clay and I can plant trees on it just fine as well. However I found a spot of "Sandy Clay" and I can not plant trees on that.

So between my two saves I can only plant trees on fire clay.
