In the UK, about 6 million people were called up to participate in hostilities. Of these, 700 thousand people did not return from the war. This is approximately 11.5%.

Living conditions in the trenches on the front line did not allow them to stay in them for a long time. Often it was damp, cold, there was no protection from fire in them. Soldiers with a long stay in the trenches could quickly lose their morale.
In this regard, the British army constantly replaced soldiers in the trenches. Between major battles, a military unit, as a rule, was in the trenches for about 10 days a month, and of these, soldiers were directly on the front line for no more than three days. It was not uncommon for soldiers to not be sent forward for a whole month.

In critical moments, for example, during the offensive, the British military could be on the front lines for a week, but much more often they were changed after a couple of days.

This saying is attributed to German commanders. It supposedly refers to the brave British soldiers under the use of worthless old aristocrats in French castles. In fact, this phrase was invented by the historian Alan Clark.

During the war years, more than 200 generals were wounded or killed in captivity. Most went to the front line every day. In battles, they meet much closer to the center of the battle than the generals of our days.

Never before had tactics and technology changed so radically in four years of war. It was a time of outstanding innovation. In 1914, the generals pranced across the battlefield on horseback, and the soldiers in caps went on the attack without the slightest fire cover. Both sides were armed primarily with rifles. Four years later, the troops went on the attack in steel helmets and under the cover of artillery fire.
