Beskrivelse
Today is Easter Sunday so in the interests of authenticity(!) here is a paschal candle based on an example from Spain circa 1450 (now in the Metropolitan Museum, New York). Unfortunately I could only get a clear image of one face of the pillar.

In the western Christian tradition, from the 10th Century onward the candle was placed near the Gospel in the church until the feast of the Ascension; in the 12th Century the candle grew in size so as to merit the attribution of a pillar: there are cases of candles weighing about 300 pounds (136 kg).

The candle is blessed at the start of the 50 days of Easter season and is lit for all liturgical offices. After Pentecost it is left next to the baptismal font where it is lit during Baptisms and next to the funeral casket during Funeral services. In simple terms, the light represents Christ - the Light of the World.

I've sent an email to the Metroplitan Museum in New York to see if I might get images for the other faces. You never know unless you ask!

Even if it's one face of the pillar, it is appreciated that you made this, and certainly the fact you helped make it survive to be enjoyed by the general public instead of being in a museum, I'm sure the Spanish caretakers of that time would also appreciate your efforts. :selike:
