It is using Ascii characters to form the image. I've just set the density to be close together to make the game still playable. I have 3 different variants.

A darker version where the ascii characters are more visible but its hard to see where your going with the lighting.

This version which I concluded was a nice balance with lighting

And finally a bright version where the ascii characters are much more dense and closer together

With each version you also see slight changes to the ascii character sizes too.

wouldn't Ascii art mean forming the image out of Ascii characters? This looks like pixels with black space in between them.
