North American P-51 Mustang

Originally developed for the RAF, the Mustang proved itself capable of surpassing the German aircraft of the time, giving the Allies air superiority by 1944. One of the, if not the best fighters of WW2, it was used extensively by the British and American armies during and after the war and was exported to a large number of countries, remaining in service until the 1980s. Nowadays, they remain popular as civilian aircraft.
