However, I suspect there might be another way around this limitation: What if you made a fractional part of a wheel that could be assembled into a wheel? A 4x2 wheel made from 4 identical 90° sections could have square hole that's almost 3 blocks wide. If made from 8 45º pieces, it could have an octagonal hole almost 4 blocks wide.
Do you think such a wheel would have any issues functioning as a wheel?
I ask because I could pair it with a wheel cover, and use that to put the steering joint inside the wheel.
This would give you center point steering without the controllers and bearings you would otherwise need.
