I said it was "shit hot". In Australia (at least in my generation) it is a good thing.
From the dictionary, including Collins, Cambridge, Urban and also Wikipedia, etc.

I deleted the original comment meant to be a, perhaps funny compliment because it seems to have fallen to the wayside (failed to complete it's objective).

Saying something is shit is not a compliment, saying something this is THE shit, is.
