If you need help identifying the .dat file, once it's renamed you can unzip it and use something like Notepad to look at the mod.xml file, which is a small file containing the mod's name, author, and a brief description.
Alternatively, you can see if the mod is listed at http://community.gaslampgames.com/threads/completed-mods-index.1951/ and download the .zip from there. Information on how to install is at http://community.gaslampgames.com/threads/dod-modding-and-mod-installation-guide-updated-6-5-2012.1335/ .
Note that there will probably be conflicts if you try to run the two identical mod files at the same time.
I seem to recall reading over at gaslampgames.com that they're working on some manner of official (Steam-integrated) fix for this, too, but I can't seem to find the post.

(I assume this method also protect your Saves from getting corrupted if the mod is updated and changed, since the mod would update in the suscribe folder, but not in the save.)
