If you want to have your characters "lay low", I believe the way to do this is to toggle on sneaking mode when they wake up from being unconscious, or are playing dead. When they stop ragdolling, they should lie prone and crawl, at least if there are enemies nearby.
There isn't a function to go prone when your characters are conscious and healthy, only when they wake up from unconsciousness.
