Like you have to defend your base and NPC's with turrets, and those turrets are made with lots of components that need materials which are considered obsolete the first 15 minutes of gameplay, like copper.

The NPC's spawn mobs around them, and mobs slowly destroy blocks to get to NPC's, and each block has different amounts of hitpoints they can take before being destroyed.
