Can mods mess up a save file?
I’ve been playing vanilla ats and been wanting to slowly creep up into mods but always been afraid to be deep in a save file but also don’t want to start new and broke. But I really want to add just sound mods for trucks and wondering if it’s easy to disable or remove or even add mods without the stress of losing my save file or corrupting it. Should I back up my save file or are engine sound mods pretty easy to add and remove?

Some mods can indeed mess up save files, although it's not that common.

If you worried about it, it can't hurt to make a back-up file before adding mods. That way you can keep both a modded and unmodded profile.

This is recommended as with some game updates mods can break and need an update. Till your mods are updated you can play with either the mods temporary removed or with the unmodded profile.

I have encountered some mods that cause corrupted save files before due to being broken, which means the game can't be loaded, but it doesn't erase that save file completely. Best bet is to always make sure your mod is up-to-date (and this should be the mod author's job to announce that) and remove outdated mod, even if it seems compatible. Keep backup save files, like MLH82 said, to prevent something worse from happening.
