This may be too late now, but some "squads" are selectable individuals but there are some true Squads that are only able to be used as an entire team. When looking at the units, if you see a "A" in the bottom left of the unit card, that means it is effectively always one entity no matter what. Any other icon for infantry means the group can be split apart into smaller or individual units.
