I am not a character builder myself but I have found that modeling large grid blocks is next to impossible because of compound building.

Most of the new characters created in SE are just new skins over the existing model. Not sure that would really work in this case. I think you would have to have a whole new model which introduces all kinds of problems with the skeleton and animation.
