x2 had something like it. you build a mine and it becomes a interior you can fly into....used to sit inside and enjoyed it.... X3 had it on the surface with connections, you could see that something was going on with a mine but you couldn't fly into the interior. X:R had this at one mine and it was only for show when you landed. they also had the mines connected by gangways in the teladi expansion dlc X:R that looked like x3. X4 has no interior mines only the yaki one and the xenon ones which you can't fly into, perhaps someone could open the yaki mine up and make it work as a base with docks... lots of nice potential for hidden space weed oil milling or smuggling xenon agi or discreet hacking passing cargo ships to drop loot.. lots of potential here. Looks like a regular asteroid but lots of people walking around inside maybe some heavy lift cranes and cargo containers.

There already asteroid bases in the game, they just don't do anything.

Someone could possibly mod one of those to be functional.
