Question about "moving" portals
Bear with me, I'm not a designer, just a player. But this idea's been knocking around in my head, and now is your chance to either tell me I'm an idiot, or tell me yeah that's already a thing you moron. I'll take either.

I know you can't put a portal on a moving object. But what if the object was stationary and the rest of the chamber was moving? I'm picturing a 3-D field of scattered white cubes, and the chamber itself turns and weaves through the field so the cubes pass through holes in the chamber. From the player's perspective, they would be moving. I'm not sure how gravity would play into this, and I'm not even thinking as far as an actual puzzle. (If gravity is a problem, introduce sticky gel perhaps.) Just seemed like a nifty idea, so please feel free to tell me eighty-three other people have thought of this already.

That's actually not a bad idea. And I was thinking the same thing regarding the illusion of portals moving when it's actually the player moving. If I was to build that, I would have the moving chamber parented by a movement entity that follows path tracks for direction and turning. There might even be path branch redirection. As for gravity, you would need a floor to stand on while the chamber is moving. It sounds to me it is possible. However, if a moving surface goes over a stationary surface with an active portal, as in no gap between them, it might cancel the portal. I'm not sure how far it needs to be away from it. I don't know if it's been done but I'd say it's possible.

It is possible to put portals on moving surfaces but you need to type something into the console. There's also point entities that can invoke console commands automatically when triggered so that the player doesn't have to. I hope this sheds some light on this topic

Cheers.

Well if the great Skyferret thinks my idea is a good one, then I'm happy. :steamhappy: (no seriously i love your chambers, thank you for the reply)
