How to open DX11 DDS files?
HI all. I'm simply trying to make and edit textures in GIMP for Space Engineers, specifically the DDS files. However, it refuses to open them because apparently it doesn't support DX11 DDS formats.

I have the DDS plugin for GIMP, but it's nearly ten years old and is long since deprecated. I've scoured the depths of Google and Bing for answers, downloaded so much junk, and so far - nothing. Even googling the error for it brings up only 323 results.

Basically - how the hecky heck do you guys make your textures? I've even tried editing the textures from mods and get the same results. I've spent nearly 6 hours on this just trying to find some iota of documentation...

The Experimental branch for GIMP, can open all DX11 DDS BC formats.
There is also an converter in the SEModSDK for converting DDS BC7 and DDS BC3 to BC3 or PNG.

Most of us basically still use the old tools, as little has changed.
Visit the discord for more information.
I was using Paint.NET to customize textures until recently, when I moved over to Linux. So I'm late to the OP's party. I'm particularly interested in this SEModSDK. Where do I get this tool? SE is running fine for me with Proton (not so with Paint.NET), so I'm hoping the SEModSDK tool will as well.

Greetings, the SDK is known as the Space Engineers Mod SDK and listed as a "Tool" on Steam, in the Steam Library so set visibility to "Tools & Software" as visible.

The SDK itself is essentially a folder of tools, FBX models (The SE models themselves, but no textures as those are handled via ref linkages inside the model during packing), and similar.
The tools are best used in coordination with additional knowledge, the Wiki (GG one) is quite handy, as is the Discord.
Do you have a link to the Wiki and Discord? I'm surprised these aren't included in a pinned post (unless I'm blind this early in the AM).

I believe the discord is mentioned in the Articles, but its also likely also in the wiki itself.
