Good idea.
I find that your airports are constantly evolving and growing, much like real airports over time. Remodeling, rebuilding terminals, expanding taxiways, adding runways. Even the airport where I grew up essentially completely rebuilt itself, on top of it's existing footprint, from the arrival/departure areas, to every terminal and gate -- about 15 years ago all while remaining in operation throughout.
I find myself sometime constructing things, that I know are temporary structures or terminals, check in gates, baggage claims, etc that I just need to relocate so I can do the heavy lifting. I'll try to make it work within the existing footprint as much as I can, but it's part of the fun to me. There's always something to tweak or optimize and sometimes you have to weigh the risk/reward and trying to do so while staying operational and profitable without upsetting contracts. That's sometimes taking near a week to clear a stand so as not to cancel any flights so you can decommission the old and relocate/replace it.
I'd always recommend focusing on a small profitable airport first. Get stable, avoid loans if you can -- I hate climbing out of that hole -- and expand naturally as you research. Getting a small regional airport, serving only 12 small commercial gates, with 1 Small Runway, 1 Small Fuel Depot, 2 Fuel Trucks, flight checks, and baggage handling(optional, as it's a big expense and baggage bays are expensive to replace). (Small commercial doesn't require any cleaning or catering so can skip it, but research it when ready). Then provide basic shopping and food needs. This ends up being the original footprint terminal that will fully be replaced when I eventually expand to service M and up. You can complete all research on this setup as well.
That's sorta my start, I like to start with little and grow naturally, and the better you plan the faster and more efficient that expansion will be, particularly when it comes to objects that can't be relocated without destroying them. ie Baggage Bay's at 100k each. Start small, plan for the future, and grow into your future layout instead of trying to build it from the start.
Edit: Oops, just realized I Necro'd this thread while technically it only being the 2nd oldest in this discussion forum.
