Wait, be patient. Often times if your busy on your computer slows this down.
Maybe it is also updating downloading a version needed of the (Microsoft VC Redist Package). I find some games need to install an older version. Your AV could be scanning all activity checking everything especially if you have Norton on board. I often times disable my AV .
Are the drivers up to date for your GPU?
If you have some concerns open the task manager and have a look at what processes are running.
On your taskbar rightside also.

I am running on Windows 7, I am currently just watching some youtube videos and thats it. Other things should be uptodate.

Youtube could be hogging the internet :) That happens to me too Steam sucks all the bandwidth and CPU power sometimes as it uses all 4 cores.

It shows some progess, the blue bar seems to be filled up, but the message says step 2 of 1. And it is still loading. I guess I should wait a bit longer to see what will happen

Go to Steam top left and then settings and delete web browser cache I find this helps to speed it up a bit.
