How do you get customised ships to appear in the hanger menu so that they can be built?

When I try to use some of the existing sample custom ship mods (such as the red rhino), and my own minor attempts, I can see no errors but I also cannot get them to be available for construction in the hanger--they are simply not listed to be clicked upon.
