A lot of buildings in the USA are built with brick (esp red brick) or have a faux brick façade as a simple aspect of society's expectations and traditionalism. Very charming, but also kind of boring. Since this game isn't exclusively american anyway, I alway welcome an addition from the world of modern and contemporary architecture.
We don't always have to think outside the box; sometimes the box just needs to be expanded.

Kliekie, this is a super cool firehouse. At first I was thinking, "Hey, that's not what firehouses look like in America." Then I started wondering, why the heck not?! This is awesome! Love the balance.
