Sometimes it's to get the regnal numbers right. For example, the Pope in 1066 (Alexander II) would be listed as Pope Alexander I if they didn't include the 2nd century Pope Alexander. In other cases, I imagine that they added earlier characters simply for the fun of it. It can be interesting exploring a dynasty's family tree or a title back to its beginning.

The history files sometimes go farther back in time than 769, Ibn Isfendil. The Roman emperors are listed all the way back to Augustus. The Persian emperors go back to the first Sasanid. And the caliphs go all the way back to Muhammad.

If you're feeling ambitious, it's real easy to make your own Wikipedia links. Use the charinfo console command to get a character's ID number. Then add new lines to WikipediaLinks.csv in your game's localization directory. If you make a bunch of them, submit your additions to the Paradox forum CK2 but reports, and they'll eventually get added to the game!
